This dive bar engagement photo session was the perfect way to beat the heat in the middle of a blazing Texas summer. As soon as the Liberty started playing the Tortured Poets Department, I knew we were in for a good time.
Carly and Jenny wanted engagement photos that felt like them: Casual and laidback. We chose to go dive bar hopping in East 6th Street in Austin. We started at the Liberty, their favorite casual date night spot. To illicit a more natural feel to the photos, I encouraged Carly and Jenny to pretend they were on a first date and trying to make a move by teaching one another pool. Goofing around helped them relax in front of the camera. It also led to some sweet moments caught on camera that were totally authentic and not guided by me at all.
After a round of pool, we headed to the Low Down Lounge which was where they hosted their engagement party. We ordered their signature drinks (whiskey coke for Carly and a Michelob Ultra for Jenny) and ended the evening inside a photobooth. It was so completely and utterly true to their personalities. Exactly how an engagement session should be.
I shot these dive bar engagement photos on a mix of 35 mm film and a digital camera.
I used the 35 mm film to evoke a feeling of nostalgia and timelessness. When you look at the film photos, you don’t know what decade they were shot in based on the editing alone. 35 mm film also just seems to complement the unpretentious vibes of your neighborhood dive bar.
